An overview of Glandular fever and the Common cold.
Glandular fever and influenza are both responsible for the largest number of days absent from school. Caused by the Epstein Barr virus, Glandular fever occurs most commonly in late childhood, although adults are also susceptible especially when under extreme stress. The acute phase of glandular fever, characterised by swollen glands, an increase in temperature, sore throat and extreme tiredness and lethargy may last two to three weeks and the effects can linger for months or even years. A virus is an insidious and stealthy invader. It is not a living cell, but a piece of genetic material that takes up residence in the body's cells. A virus does not have enough genes (in the form of DNA) to reproduce itself. Instead it commandeers the body's cells own DNA and orders DNA to produce more virus and virus carrying cells. Thus it hijacks the body's genes and uses them for its own purposes. Viruses invade the body's immune defences, infecting white blood cells that digest injured cells and foreign particles. Infected cells promote the spread and persistence of the infection and inactivate T-killer cells that clear the original infection. The result is on-going sickness and immune suppression.
There are six guidelines: The more ill you are, the more Vitamin C will be tolerated before diarrhoea is experienced.
The increased tolerance is proportional to the toxicity of the infection.
Increasing the frequency of taking a specialised Vitamin C combination formula can increase tolerance and improve uptake in the body by 50% or more.
Using the maximum possible intake will give maximum relief for symptoms which can result in shortening the infection and reducing complications caused by the virus.
Short delays in taking doses may prolong the infection.
Symptoms may return rapidly if dose levels are not maintained long enough.
The point of bowel tolerance is easily sensed by the patient, as is the required duration of treatment.
Do be aware that viruses use iron to reproduce, so those with glandular fever should have these levels checked. This can be a contributor to the on going fatigue those who have had this may experience.
