Health Information

Zinc is an important trace mineral required for the functioning of over 200 known enzymes. It is also required for the proper action of hormones such as insulin, growth hormones and the sex hormones. Zinc is important for proper immune function, wound healing, sensory function, sexual function and the sex hormones. Studies show that the average zinc intake (from the diet) is between 47% & 67% of the RDA.

Although severe zinc deficiency is very rare in developed countries, many people (especially the elderly) have marginal zinc deficiency. Marginal zinc deficiency may be reflected by an increased susceptibility to infection, poor wound healing, decreased sense of smell or taste, and a number of minor skin disorders, including acne, eczema and psoriasis.

Some other physical findings that often correlate with low zinc status include decreased ability to see at night or with poor lighting, growth retardation, a reduction in testes size, mouth ulcers, a white coating on the tongue and marked halitosis (bad breath). Eating disorders are also associated with low zinc status. White spots on the fingernails may also reflect zinc status, correlating to poor wound healing as a result of a zinc deficiency.
