The main uses of Slippery Elm are reported to be that it strengthens and soothes. It has been used in gastrointestinal problems such as hiatus hernias, gastritis, ulcers, enteritis, colitis, diverticulitis & other intestinal inflammatory condition. Also used in both constipation and diarrhoea, as it can soothe and astringe at the same time. Can be used as a gargle for both sore throats and tonsillitis. May be used topically in diaper rash and haemorrhoids. It may also be used as a food during convalescence as it is gentle and easily assimilated. Used historically as a wholesome & nutritious food for infants & invalids.
Instructions for use: To make a drink mix 1-2 teaspoons of slippery elm bark powder into a smooth paste by slowly adding warm water and stirring continuously. Once a consistent paste has been made, slowly add more warm water while stirring. Add a sprinkling of cinnamon or honey to taste. It is important to add the water slowly and for the water to be added to the powder, not the powder added to the water. After opening, reseal the bag and store in a cool dry place.
