Tests found that resveratrol increased the activity of enzymes known as sirtuins, which prolong the lifespan of every organism scientists have tested it on, including yeast, worms, fish and fruit flies.
This powerful antioxidant compound may also provide protection against a myriad of degenerative disorder. Resveratrol has been shown to reduce carcinogenesis by activating apoptosis (programmed cell death) and inhibiting cellular proliferation and angiogenesis. It has been shown to reduce oxidative damage, suppress platelet aggregation, modulate inflammation, reduce insulin resistance, enhance glucose tolerance and promote healthy oestrogen metabolism. Polyphenols Are a group of highly bioactive plant compounds, a large number of which have antibiotic and antioxidant activity within the plant. Resveratrol is a polyphenol compound predominantly found in grape skins, grape seeds, Japanese knotweed and peanuts and is produced in response to pathogenic attack, fungal infections (common in grapes) and UV-irradiation. Red wine extract and powder Resveratrol is present in grape skins, stalks and seeds. The longer the grape skins are present during the fermentation process the higher the resveratrol content, resulting in a significantly higher concentration of resveratrol in red wine than in white wine, where the skins are removed earlier on in the process. Japanese knotweed (Polygonum cuspidatum) Japanese Knotweed is claimed to be the highest known source of resveratrol containing 1,000 times the resveratrol content of grapes. Each capsule contains: 100mg red wine extract (providing 30% polyphenols (30mg)), 100mg red wine powder, 75mg Japanese knotweed (providing 50% resveratrol (37.5mg)), 50mg grape seed extract (providing 95% polyphenols (47.5mg)). In a plant derived capsule, also containing cellulose and magnesium.
Safety in pregnancy or lactation has not been established, however it is advised that pregnant women and nursing mothers avoid use due to possible phytoesterogenic activities. Caution in concurrent use with anticoagulants.
