Nutritional aspects for infants. Breast fed infants have been shown to have fewer infections than infants that are not breast fed and when they get infected, the duration of the episode is shorter than in formula fed babies. Lactobacilli help protect against colonization of harmful pathogens. The intestinal flora is different in breast fed babies and formula fed infants. While the major species in breast fed infants are usually lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria, formula-fed infants are dominated by bactericides, clostridia and E.coli. L. reuteri is transferred to infants during breast feeding and is a prominent part of the gut flora of breast fed babies.
Besides the generic positive effects of L. reuteri, it is unique in synthesizing an antimicrobial compound called reuterin that can inhibit gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria, yeasts, fungi and protozoa. Lactobacilli can also positively affect the growth, proliferation and integrity of the intestinal mucosa, which in turn can affect nutrient absorption.
What is AggH? AggH is the protein that mediates aggregation of intestinal bacteria. Aggregation of colony forming units leads to colonization. The gene for AggH is present in all L. reuteri strains. AggH belongs to a protein family that has not been found in other species of lactobacillus.
Allergies and lactobacillus.Numerous international studies conclude that allergic children were less often colonised with Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteria than the non-allergic children. It is thought that differences in the indigenous flora might affect the priming of the immune system in early childhood. In a double blind trial, Lactobacilli were given to infants with atopic dermatitis (allergic inflammation of the skin) over a one month period. The treatment resulted in lower symptoms scores and reduced levels of inflammatory mediators in stool samples. L. reuteri showed positive effects in reducing allergic response as well as the incidence of allergies.
Diarrhoea in children. Diarrhoea is a common reason for morbidity and hospitalization for children worldwide. The search for simple, low cost and effective methods to prevent acute gastro-enteritis remains an important goal. Studies completed at the Diarrhoea clinic, National institute of Nutrition, New Mexico confirmed that L. reuteri can reduce the risk of diarrhoea in young children when consumed daily. In a Finnish study, reuteri was administered to 6 to 36 month old children admitted to the hospital with acute diarrhoea. 75% of the cases were diagnosed as rotavirus-induced diarrhoea. A 41% decrease in watery stools was observed during the 1st 24 hours in the L. reuteri treated children, compared to only 6% decrease in the placebo group.
Cholesterol lowering effects. Bile salts may be deconjugated by L. reuteri to free bile acids that are poorly absorbed and easily excreted. The removal of bile acids means that more cholesterol (which is needed to build bile salts) is removed from the blood, thus lowering cholesterol levels. L. reuteri supports the process whereby cholesterol is converted to coprostanol that is excreted from the body.
International research Over the past 15 years research has proven L. reuteri to be a uniquely efficacious probiotic for human use. Extensive scientific studies, field tests with animals and clinical trials using human volunteers have shown that host specific strains of this Lactobacillus colonise their respective hosts intestinal tracts and thereby confer broad-spectrum protection from an assortment of diseases of several causes including : Bacterial, e.g. salmonella and E.coli) viral e.g. rotavirus, protozoal e.g. cryptosporidium parvum, Fungal e.g. candida albicans, and Chemical induced e.g. antibiotics, methotrexate-induced enteritis.
