St Johns Wort, which has been used medicinally for 2000 years, now emerges as an effective agent in reducing mild to moderate depression . Externally this herb has long been used to help heal wounds and alleviate physical pain. However its use is age old in Europe as an internal treatment for the emotional pain of depression. It has a genuine mild anti-depressant medicinal action, while relaxing the body. Its action is gentle, yet very effective. It has been traditionally used for its effect on the nervous system. The combination of its relaxing activity and nervous system restorative properties make it an ideal herb for use in anxiety, irritability, neuralgia, nerve damage or injury, nervous tension, depression and general nervous system debility. In one study, 105 patients under care for depression took 900mg of this herb for 4 weeks, and were then evaluated according to standard physiological tests. the results showed that the herb had reduced the amount and intensity of depressive symptoms, including sadness, headache, poor sleep, exhaustion and a sense of worthlessness. In Austria, 67% of the patients experiencing mild to moderate depression were helped with St Johns Wort. Improvements in temporary depressive moods was noticed after 2 1/2 weeks. Significant improvement was noted in the following symptoms, feeling of sadness, hopelessness, helplessness, uselessness, emotional fear as well as symptoms of falling asleep/disturbed sleep, cardiac troubles, exhaustion and headache. The recommended dosage is 300 mg of St Johns Wort extract 3 times a day. Each capsule contains 300mg. For example, you might take the first 300 mg on arising, the 2nd 300 mg three hours later and the final 300 mg three hours after that. Some find that taking two 300 mg doses at breakfast and a third at lunch works best. The effectiveness in treating depression with this herb should not be evaluated until at least 6 weeks of a 900 mg daily dosage. It is important to give St Johns Wort a chance. To decide after 1 or 2 weeks "This isn't working for me" and discontinue treatment is ill advised.
