Leaky Gut Syndrome
Saturday, March 15th 2003
This one sounds more like a problem for the plumber to solve than the Naturopath...
This oddly named condition refers to what can happen if the cells lining our intestines become inflamed and 'compromised', allowing the passage of partially digested foods, toxins and bacteria, not normally absorbed, to pass through the intestinal wall into our blood stream. Symptoms and conditions linked to a hyper-permeable intestinal lining include digestive problems such as irritable bowel syndrome and food sensitivities through to more serious conditions like arthritis and chronic fatigue.
As with most intestinal problems, the integrity of our digestive tract can be compromised by poor nutrition and a deficiency of Vitamins, Minerals and Essential fatty acids, a high intake of saturated fat or alcohol, certain drugs including coffee, heavy metals, and parasite or candida infestations.
In order to repair this "leaky gut" there are some valuable natural dietary and herbal supplements we can incorporate into our daily regime, as well as avoiding foods we know adversely affect us.
Help is close at hand with these well known supplements
The cells lining our digestive tract are replaced approximately every 24 hours, with old ones being shed, and new ones being generated. By providing key nutrients we can enhance this regeneration and keep inflammation and discomfort to a minimum.
COLOSTRUM - this enriching first milk received by nursing young, to boost their immune system and provide growth factors, is sourced from New Zealand dairy cows. These growth factors stimulate the proliferation of epithelial tissue cells (the type of tissue the digestive tract is lined with), assisting in repair and replacement of the gut lining and helping decrease inflammation. Immune factors (immunoglobulins and lactoferrin) attack pathogens in the gut, preventing their reproduction and further damage to the intestinal lining, while giving our immune system a healthy boost.
FLAXSEED OIL - provides essential fatty acids (EFAs) to play a dual role in helping correct leaky gut syndrome. Their potent anti-inflammatory actions block the pro-inflammatory pathways that result in cell damage and, as new cells are being replaced, the EFAs are incorporated into the cell membranes, providing integrity and protection.
ANTIOXIDANTS A,C,E and Beta-carotene protect against free radical damage and when combined with a Multi Vitamin and Mineral formula support healthy cellular growth.
ALOE VERA JUICE - this powerful cleanser and detoxifier has a healing & soothing effect on the gut lining, while enhancing digestive processes with a naturally occurring enzyme content.
ACIDOPHILUS LACTOBACILLUS - these micro-organisms ensure the correct ratios of bowel flora for optimum internal health - This is essential!
HERBAL ALLERGY SUPPORT - as the body is bombarded with allergens via the gut wall, specific herbs can decrease the body's inflammatory response and settle down allergic symptoms.
PARASITE DETOXIFICATION - the elimination of intestinal parasites is a crucial factor in digestive health. Both the parasites and their toxins interfere with normal processes and may cause or exacerbate a leaky gut condition.
It takes time to repair a damaged digestive tract but with guidance from your health professional and a few lifestyle and supplement changes you can be your old self again.
