Spring and Summer = Allergies
Thursday, October 12th 2006
Spring has sprung and for many people it seems as though their nose has also sprung a leak. Allergic reactions, hayfever and sinus problems all increase in severity during spring and summer months. Grass, trees, flowers and weeds all send out pollen at different times between September and January. Around 30 percent of all New Zealanders are affected and there is an acknowledged connection to allergic conditions like, asthma and eczema.
Identification of the allergy trigger is not always easy. The most common triggers include pollen, animal hair, house dust mites and high levels of mould indoors during winter. An allergy is an inappropriate response by the body's immune system to a substance that is not normally harmful. On the day we are born, our immune system begins learning that its goal is to identify everything we come into contact with and see if it's friendly. In children who are allergy prone (and most allergies begin in childhood) the body begins to build up antibodies. Then, upon a second contact with the allergy causing substance, these antibodies cause certain immune cells to release powerful chemicals called antihistamines. This is a normal reaction. But when the invader is otherwise harmless material such as pollen, dust, cat and dog hair, milk and grains are for people without allergic sensitivities, then the reaction is inappropriate and possibly dangerous.
Asthma, wheezing and breathing problems
Although the exact cause of asthma remains controversial, there is a considerable body of opinion that thinks childhood asthma is generally due to food allergies but after the age of ten it is due to allergens in the air.
Some natural remedies that may help
Nature's Way HAS capsules (Hayfever, Allergies, Sinus) is a herbal formula that acts like an antihistamine and provides a natural soothing decongestant action for the irritated nasal passages. It includes Brigham Tea herb to help unblock and remove tension from the sinus areas. Other herbs help relieve the watery nature of hayfever and relieve itchy eyes. Developed by Dr John R. Christopher over 40 years ago, it is one of the pre-eminent allergy formulas in use today. It is specially formulated for long term use to strengthen the mucous membranes and prevent them from over reacting to allergens.
