Chromium the Blood Sugar Balancer

The number of New Zealanders diagnosed with diabetes is of growing concern but there are thought to be even more undiagnosed, borderline diabetics, controlling their diabetes through reduced sugar intake. The number of people experiencing low-blood sugar (hypoglycaemia - the opposite of diabetes) is possibly as large but is not recorded. Chromium is an essential trace mineral and shortages in the diet have been linked to glucose intolerance and an increased incidence of diabetes particularly among the elderly.
The role of chromium in the diet
Because insulin is dependent upon biologically active chromium, some people consider chromium the "master" nutrient for controlling blood sugar. Chromium levels decrease gradually with age and a deficiency can lead to low blood sugar and may be a factor in some cases of adult-onset diabetes (high blood sugar) and heart disease. There is also evidence to suggest that in some people chromium may play a role in lowering blood pressure, regulating appetite, reducing sugar cravings and promoting lean body mass. Chromium is also critical for sports people and athletes as well as during pregnancy.
In the early 1970's, Dr Walter Mertz, then Director of the US Department of Agriculture's Human Nutrition Research Centre, after considerable research discovered that chromium complexed with several amino acids and niacin (vitamin B3), was effective. This led Dr Mertz to conclude that niacin-bound chromium (called chromium "polynicotinate" was the biologically active form of chromium that potentiates insulin's action in the body. As a result of Dr Mertz's findings, ChromeMate (chromium polynicotinate) was developed.
Hypoglycaemia or low blood sugar
Low blood sugar can also sap energy levels. ChromeMate helps the body convert food to energy more efficiently and can be useful taken at lunch time to help prevent the afternoon tiredness experienced by a large number of people. A study which appeared in Metabolism (1987) reported that women with symptoms of hypoglycaemia were treated with 200mcgs of chromium per day for three months. Chromium supplementation normalised blood sugar levels and completely alleviated symptoms in all except one patient.
