Probiotics & Immunity
Friday, March 31st 2006
To strengthen your immune system, add a daily dose of probiotics to your arsenal of supplements. That's what researchers concluded from a recent study at the Institute for Physiology and Biochemistry of Nutrition in Germany. Participants in the study who took supplemental probiotics daily for at least three months shortened bouts of the common cold by almost two days and reduced the severity of symptoms such as headaches, coughing, and sneezing(Clinical Nutrition, 2005, vol.24, no.4).
"Probiotics are not just good for the gut, they are also a good immune stimulator," says Hilary Andrews, ND, an adjunct professor at the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, Oregon, USA. "The bacteria in probiotics strengthen the immune system by providing it with extra stimulation, and then when we are exposed to viruses or harmful bacteria, the immune system is strong enough to handle them quickly and effectively."
But not all probiotics are created equal.
Primadophilus - Making a Promise That Changes Yours Expectations
The original brand that pioneered probiotics in New Zealand is again leading the way - with the most advanced product range available in New Zealand. The enhanced Primadophilus formulas include higher potencies, vegetarian capsules, rice and potato starch bases, addition of FOS to the powders and new True Potency labels.
They are backed by the following three promises that separate them from all the others.
True Potency - The potency of colony forming units (CFU's) claimed on the label is fully guaranteed until expiration, not just at time of manufacture. With Primadophilus you get exactly what you are expecting.
True Release - All Primadophilus capsules are enteric coated to ensure survivability through stomach acid and proper release into the intestines. Without enteric coating, many of the strains would be "dead on arrival". Disintegration tests (using USP method 2040) are conducted on every batch of capsules to make sure they are dissolving and releasing at the right time.
True Identity - "It is what we say it is?" Only the strains we intend make their way into a Primadophilus product. We use unique manufacturing techniques and laboratory testing to verify purity and ensure they are not adulterated. Look for the True Potency logo on the Primadophilus label.
Recent UK Research
Not all strains of bacteria used in probiotic products survive through the entire digestive system, conclude study results published in the UK.
The efficacy of probiotic bacteria is known to depend on their survival through the acidic conditions of the stomach. The new results underline the vulnerable stability of probiotic bacteria.
The researchers tested 35 strains of bacteria. They used laboratory models of the human gut to imitate the conditions of the stomach, upper intestine and lower intestine. The bacteria tested were grown and their numbers standardised before each experiment began.
"Generally strains coming from human sources such as Reuteri were more able to survive in the lower digestive tract than dairy strains," they write.
The study also suggests that Lactobacillus species were resistant to the gastric environment but were sensitive to upper intestinal content. Conversely Bifidobacterium species were more likely to be affected by stomach acidity but survived in the upper intestine.
