Straight From the Fountain of Youth

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease characterized by the breakdown of the joint cartilage that breakdown at the join cartilage that affects millions of people world-wide. Among the primary components of cartilage there is collagen, a structural protein that provides strength and flexibility to the joints, muscles, tendons and more. While there are three primary types of collagen, it is the collagen type II that is the predominant form in articular cartilage.
Taking a closer look at the structure of joint cartilage reveals elements such as Glucosamine, chondroitin, hyaluronic acid (HA) and collagen type II. Healthy levels of these compounds are critical to maintaining healthy cartilage and synovial fluid.
Hyaluronic acid is a clear fluid found throughout the body - especially in connective tissues of the skin and joints. It acts both as an internal moisturiser and lubricant. It moisturises and rejuvenates the skin, smoothes premature lines/wrinkles, as well as lubricating and cushioning joints. Visible signs of ageing are dull and wrinkled skin.
Its primary function is the retention of moisture that allows internal fibres to pass over each other smoothly, thus making tissues (such as the skin) softer. Within the joints hyaluronic acid is an essential part of cartilage and synovial fluid. As we age our body produces less hyaluronic acid.
In 1996 BioCell Technology launched BioCell Collagen II. Carefully manufactured through a patented process, BioCell Collagen II contains highly efficacious and naturally occurring levels of hydrolyzed collagen type II protein and low molecular weight glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) including chondroitin sulfate (minimum 20 percent), hyaluronic acid, (minimum 10 percent), Glucosamine sulfate and other proteoglycans.
Nature's Way Hydraplenish contains the patented BioCell II complex of low molecular weight hyaluronic acid that the body can more easily absorb and get better results. MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) is a source of sulphur and is included with hyaluronic acid in Hydraplenish. Together they have complementary benefits for healthy skin and joints.
Hyaluronic acid is not really found in food. Some is found in rare "starchy" root vegetables. But for all practical purposes taking a hyaluronic acid supplement is the best way to add it to the diet.
Research on Osteoarthritis
Recently, results from a clinical study were presented at Experimental Biology 2004. 3 Researchers from Miami Research Associates enrolled 16 subjects with osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee or hand for a two-month, placebo-controlled trial. Subjects received 1,000 mg/d of hydrolyzed type II collagen (as BioCell Collagen II) or placebo. The group receiving BioCell Collagen II experienced significant improvement in all outcomes including pain and joint stiffness; there were no significant adverse events. The researchers concluded BioCell Collagen II was a safe and effective supplement for adjunctive treatment of OA.
