Winning the Battle With Candida
Friday, October 1st 2004
Candida albicans, a single cell fungi, is one of many hundred different microbes that normally live in the intestine. Many people commonly experience the outward symptoms of candida overgrowth including oral, genital and anal thrush (including nappy rash, jock itch and vaginal thrush). Candidiasis is not new, as medical textbooks on paediatrics in the 1700 and 1800's described thrush, but it is certainly more prolific now.
Candida overgrowth may increase sharply due to certain medications especially antibiotics and birth control pills, diets high in sugar, and hormonal changes during the menstrual cycle or pregnancy. The result is a range of distressing symptoms, decreased digestive function and eventually increased intestinal permeability (leaky gut syndrome). This inappropriate permeability allows "foreign" particles from partially digested foods to enter the blood stream creating allergic reactions.
Until the candida infection is brought under control and the gastrointestinal tract is allowed to heal the many symptoms associated to candida will continue.
General symptoms may include: frequent infections; feeling tired or drowsy; craving sugary foods, bread or alcohol; various food allergies; feeling "spacey" - trouble concentrating, like thinking through "cotton wool"; poor coordination, muscle weakness, painful or swollen joints; mood swings, depression; dry mouth or throat, catarrh; frequent headaches; pains in chest, shortness of breath, dizziness.
Additional symptoms for women many include: vaginal burning, itching or discharge, urinary problems; difficulty getting pregnant; menstrual problems or irregular cycles.
Additional symptoms for children many include: frequent infections, particularly of the ears or tonsils; bronchitis; frequent nappy rash; colic; continuous stuffy or runny nose; dark circles under the eyes; hyperactivity or poor attention span.
Three Step Candida Control Programme
The basis of any anti-Candida regime is correct nutrition.
Before taking anything else - stop feeding the yeast. Avoid ALL sugars including (sugar, honey, fructose etc), fresh and dried fruit, fruit juices, yeast products, battery eggs and chickens, alcohol, and sweetened or processed foods. Water is also essential - at least 8 large glasses daily to help the kidneys function better and help flush toxins out of the body.
Eat plenty of fresh vegetables, meats and fish, free range eggs and poultry, beans and legumes, seeds and nuts (excluding peanuts) and rice. Yeast free bread is acceptable. Individual food sensitivities need to be taken into account.
STEP 1 - Killing the excess Candida
A combination product such as Radiance® CandAid® which includes Caprylic acid, Black walnut, Oregano oil, Garlic, Wormwood, Cat's claw and Olive leaf has proven effective at controlling candidiasis. Alternatively Enzymedica® Candidase™ which contains Cellulase and Protease. Cellulase is the enzyme that breaks down fiber. It is also the only digestive enzyme our body does not make. By adding cellulase to the diet this fiber may be removed along with mucus and our body is able to achieve balance. The cell of yeast contains some fungal cellulose or a compound called chitin. Chitin is a polysaccharide, or carbohydrate, which is structurally very similar to cellulose. For the same reasons cellulase may help remove undigested fiber in the colon, it has been used in breaking down this cellulose-like chitin. The inside of the cell of yeast is mostly protein . The enzyme protease has the ability to hydrolyze (digest) protein. Protease has been used in clinics all over the world to break down this fungus and prevent its overgrowth. The addition of protease to this formula helps the body deal with excess "die-off" or common symptoms of cleansing
STEP 2. Restoring the intestinal balance
It is vitally important that the intestines are repopulated quickly with the correct mix of "good" bacteria. Nature's Way® Primadophilus® capsules are the only proven effective range of enteric coated probiotic capsules on the New Zealand market. The enteric coating ensures that all the acidophilus and bifidus get into the intestines rather than being digested in the stomach. Yoghurt doesn't work effectively because the body digests it as food and the bacteria numbers are too low.
STEP 3. Repairing The Intestines
Radiance Colostrum Capsules provide critical nutrients to repair the intestinal lining, especially where leaky gut is involved. Colostrum helps the growth of the intestinal villi, reduces allergies and ensures nutrients are absorbed better from food.
