Latest approach to diarrhoea and gut health
Fifteen years ago Nature's Way Primadophilus products set the benchmark in New Zealand for acidophilus/probiotic products. In 2000 Nature's Way took another leap forward by introducing enteric coated Primadophilus Reuteri Capsules (pronounced roy'-tur-eye) named after Dr Reuter the discoverer.
What are probiotics?
Probiotics support and enhance life. In contrast anti-biotics are anti-life indiscriminately killing friend and foe alike in our bodies.
Probiotics are recommended in order to repopulate the intestinal tract with "friendly" micro-organisms. Most notably they prevent gastrointestinal distress in patients taking antibiotics. Ann Gastroenterol Hepatol 1993;29:15-8
In addition to their use in the prevention and treatment of acute diarrhoea, probiotics have shown benefits in clinical trials as a treatment for inflammatory bowel disease (both ulcerative colitis and Crohn's Disease).
Before birth the gastro-intestinal tract is sterile, but during the birth process and immediately afterwards babies acquire from their mothers and from the environment a host of bacterial contamination including enterococci, lactobacilli, coliforms and other micro-organisms. If a baby is breast-fed, bifidobacteria start to appear in the stools anywhere from 2 to 5 days after birth and by the end of the first week of life, bifidobacteria comprise up to 99 percent of the colonising bacteria found in an infants stools. Bifidobacteria colonisation is less strongly observed in premature infants and in formula (or cows-milk) fed infants. Paediatricians in Finland found that mothers who received the probiotics during pregnancy and lactation protected children against eczema during the first two years.
Stomach acidity is detrimental to probiotic tablets and powder with between 90-95% of adult probiotics being lost during the passage through the stomach. A guaranteed enteric coating protection on the capsules is therefore critical. Probiotic capsules need to be refrigerated to protect their viability with minimal exposure to light and air.
The benefits of Primadophilus Reuteri
Lactobacillus reuteri leads to fast colonisation of the intestinal tract and helps repair intestinal damage.
Primadophilus Reuteri capsules are enteric coated to protect the contents from stomach acidity, as the bacteria are not found in the stomach but in the intestines. Primadophilus Reuteri Powder is for babies and children who have lower hydrochloric acid levels in the stomach (and animals with severe diarrhoea).
International research over 15 years indicates that rapid colonisation of the intestines by lactobacilli confers broad-spectrum protection from an assortment of diseases including bacterial (Salmonella and E. coli), viral (rotavirus), protozoal (Cryptosporidium parvum), fungal (Candida albicans) and chemical induced (antibiotics). The rapid colonisation provided by Primadophilus Reuteri has been confirmed showing 80% colonisation within seven days and effective colonisation in 21 days. A minimum of 30 days use is required to complete colonisation.
Primadophilus reuteri is particularly useful for persons of any age where fast colonisation of the intestines is required. These would include babies and children suffering from severe diarrhoea, allergies, reflux, malabsorption, a lowered immune response and with and after courses of antibiotics as well as non breast-fed babies. Also, adults with diarrhoea from food poisoning, candida and leaky gut syndrome will benefit from re-colonisation of the intestines with probiotics.
To assist intestinal repair and aid colonisation include Nature's Start Colostrum Capsules with Primadophilus Reuteri. Check out the age-specific Primadophilus formulas at your local stockist.
