Glucosamine Sulphate: the key to trouble-free joints
Glucosamine sulphate is a synthesized salt of Glucosamine and is a major component of soft tissue such as cartilage, ligament, tendon and skin. Studies have shown that as we age we lose the ability to manufacture Glucosamine Sulphate, and that a supplementing with Glucosamine can assist the body in this process.
As a result the healing rates of soft tissue injury slows down as we age. Because it assists the regeneration of cartilage and improves joint function, Glucosamine supplements are now widely used in the treatment of osteoarthritis.
Helping to heal the natural way.
Until recently, the only treatments available for joint inflammation, injuries and disease were anti-inflammatories, steroid injections or surgery. Glucosamine is now proving to be a natural therapy preferred by many patients as an alternative to - or in conjunction with - medical treatments.
Some orthopaedic surgeons now recommend the use of Glucosamine after surgery, to assist the healing process. Clinical trials show that Glucosamine can provide better long-term pain relief from arthritis than anti-inflammatories, while actually promoting healing of the soft tissue in the joint.
Successful clinical trails!
Glucosamine has proved it's worth in long term osteoarthritis trials. The latest research findings on Glucosamine were recently detailed in a landmark study published in The Lancet, the well-known British medical journal.
In a placebo-controlled trial in Britain, Italy and the United States, the researches treated 212 patients suffering from knee osteoarthristis either with 1500mg oral Glucosamine, or a placebo, daily for three years.
Researchers found no significant joint-space loss after three years in the 106 pateints treated with Glucosamine. However, among the 106 patients on a placebo there was a progressive joint-space narrowing, with a mean joint-space loss of 0.31mm. Those who were treated had a 20 to 25 per cent improvement in symptoms, compared with a slight worsening of symptoms in the placebo group.
Dr Tim McAlindon, of the Arthritis Center, Boston University Medical Center says "The results are impressive; patients assigned to Glucosamine experienced significant improvements in pain and disability that were sustained for the three years of the study, whereas the scores among the placebo group worsened. Further more, adverse event rates were not higher than those associated with the placebo. These findings are consistent with those seen in previous symptom based studies of Glucosamine, which plays an important part in the long-term therapy of Osteoarthritis."
