Doctors Recommend a Multi-Vitamin a Day

Despite the recent adverse media comments by well-meaning New Zealand "Nutrition Professors" there is ample international and New Zealand evidence to suggest New Zealanders are unlikely to obtain all the nutrients they need including vitamins and minerals, from their current dietary regimes.

Drs Kathleen Fairfield and Robert Fletcher of Harvard medical School in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, recommend that everybody - regardless of age or health status- take a daily multivitamin. Fletcher pointed out that most Americans - except those who follow what he described as a "super-perfect" diet - likely do not get enough of certain vitamins in their diets and would benefit from multivitamins. In addition, Fletcher said, some physicians may not understand the importance of vitamin deficiency and may fail to recommend multivitamins. The evidence promoting the benefits of various vitamins is relatively new, Fletcher explained, so doctors may not yet be aware of it. Furthermore, vitamins are considered to be somewhat of an alternative therapy and some doctors have "this prejudice against anything that's not very orthodox," the researcher stated. NUTRITIONISTS MYTH

Nutritionists work on theory. The theory is that all the nutrients are in your food. The reality in New Zealand is that our soils are deficient of many minerals including Selenium, Cobalt, Chromium, Boron and Zinc. The nutritionists are unable to explain how you can obtain all the minerals you need from the vegetables you eat when it is not in the soil to start with. Farmers have known this for decades and supplement their cattle and sheep with minerals for optimum health.

Secondly, for most people, by the time the fruit and vegetables are hauled from the gardens and orchards, stored in the supermarkets for several days, then taken home and again stored in the fridge for several days, before being cooked - the nutrient content has decreased substantially. Additional to that is that unless you are buying organic, the fruit and vegetables will have been sprayed. In New Zealand there is an allowable limit for sprays on fruit and vegetables. The more you eat the more residual sprays you receive.

All of this means that there is a continual assault on the body's immune function and a depletion of nutrients essential to the optimum functioning of the body. These same "Nutrition Professors" would try and convince you that if you are taking vitamins you are only creating expensive urine. They have not provided any urine analysis from people taking vitamins that show it contains excess vitamins!

THE FACTS

If you only have time today to do one thing to protect your health, take a multivitamin.

Fletcher explained that certain people are at higher risk of vitamin deficiency, particularly the elderly and those who follow restrictive diets such as vegans. As people age, they also become less able to absorb some vitamins from their diets.

Middle aged adults who take a daily multivitamin with trace minerals may improve immune function, according to a study last year in Nutrition Research 2002;22;5-11

This study demonstrates that daily use of a multivitamin /mineral produces beneficial effects in adults between 50 and 65 years of age. In addition to improving immune function, the supplement also corrected nutritional deficiencies in people in this age group.
