Arthritis & Rheumatism
The term Arthritis describes over 100 different types of inflammatory or degenerative diseases that damage the joints. All forms of arthritis have, to a greater or lesser degree, the same initial symptoms: pain, stiffness, and swelling of the joint. Acute forms of arthritis usually result from bacterial invasion and are treated with antibiotics. Chronic forms of arthritis include osteo arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gouty arthritis.
Rheumatism is a term used by laypeople to indicate disease involving muscle or joint pain, so people may use it to apply to arthritis, bursitis, etc. Bursitis is an inflammation of a bursa and is usually caused by a direct injury or excessive friction, but may also be caused from bacterial infection. Symptoms of bursitis include pain made worse by joint movement, redness and swelling. Tendonitis is inflammation of tendon sheaths, typically caused by overuse. Its symptoms and treatment mirror those of bursitis.
