Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
The carpal tunnel is a narrow passageway in the wrist that is surrounded by bones and ligaments. Through it run tendons that move the fingers and the median nerve, which is responsible for both sensation and movement in the hand, thumb, index finger, middle finger and ring finger. Too much pressure on the median nerve causes carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). This pressure can come from swelling or anything that makes the carpal tunnel smaller and causes such symptoms as changes in sensation, pain, and restricted use of the hand and wrist. Some medical conditions can also predispose someone to carpal tunnel syndrome, including rheumatoid arthritis, hypothyroidism and diabetes.
