Canker Sores & Mouth Ulcers
Canker sores (Aphthous stomatitis) are small shallow ulcers which occur in the mouth. They can be painful and can make eating and talking uncomfortable but are not contagious. Unlike Cold Sores which are caused by a virus, the cause of Canker Sores is not fully understood – there could be dietary associations with acidic foods or allergies or underlying conditions which act as a trigger (e.g. Vitamin B12 deficiency). There is no cure, and treatments are merely aimed at reducing pain and speeding the healing process.
