Basic instructions for taking natural supplements for acute colds or the flu
At healthyonline we have a lot of options to help relieve the symptoms of a cold or the flu. Many of these can help to speed the duration suffered by this, as well as relieve the symptoms faster, naturally. The main herbal infection fighters are Echinacea, Olive Leaf, Garlic and Cat's Claw. These come in both capsules and liquid and can act as a natural antibiotic and immune system stimulant.
As an adult you could choose one of these liquid options:
Sambucus: This Elderberry extract comes in 4 different formulas, including Sambucus Original, Sambucus Sugar Free (suitable for diabetics), Sambucus Immune and Sambucus for Kids. The dosage for adults is initially 2 teaspoons four times a day, then 2 teaspoons daily.
Olive Leaf liquid: Take 5ml (teaspoonful) 3 times a day with food, until improvement. Take for up to three days after all symptoms go.
Ear, Nose & Throat (Eutherol): Eucalyptus, pine & peppermint. Immunity support against winter ills and chills. Internal and external antiseptic elixir. A great general preventative for sore throats, colds and flu. 5-10ml 4-6 times a day initially until improvement, then reduce by half. Take for up to three days after all symptoms go.
Winter Guard: The formulation includes Olive leaf, Echinacea root, Mullein, White horehound, Elecampane and Manuka Honey. 2.5ml four times a day, in a little water until improvement. The dosage can then be reduced by half, and taken for up to three days after all symptoms go.
Or these, which come in a tablet or capsule
Vir-Defence: 1 capsule three times a day until improvement, then reduce to 1 capsule daily. Take for up to 3 days after all symptoms go.
Superior Olive Leaf: Adults intensive dosage: 1 capsule after breakfast, lunch and 2 after dinner (so 4 capsules initially a day) until improvement noticed, then reduce to 1 capsule after breakfast and 1 capsule after dinner. Take at this dosage for up until 3 days after all symptoms go.
Una De Gato Comb: Cats claw, Astragalus and Echinacea in a capsule. An excellent immune stimulating formulation specifically for helping fight colds & flu, while supporting your immune system. 1 capsule three times a day initially, until improvement, then reduce to 1 capsule daily. Take for up to three days after all symptoms go.
Echinacea/Goldenseal: A popular herbal duo for helping combating infections. Initially 2 capsules three times a day until improvement, then reduce to 2 capsules once or twice a day. Take for up to three days after all symptoms go.
If your immunity is low, we have these options:
MycoDefence: If you suffer with repetitive colds and flu, you should take a course of MycoDefence. This is a deep immune tonic that helps rebuild the immune system. This is not suitable for children under 2 years.

Multi-Vite: It is unrealistic to think you can get all the vitamins and minerals you need from food alone, so taking a multivitamin such as this would be a good choice. Take 1 tablet with breakfast. Some people may initially benefit from another 1 tablet at lunch as well

If you have a cough or sore throat, we have these options:
Emphysemol: For the support of deep lung functions. Elecampane, eucalyptus and pine. A blend of natural antiseptic herbs that helps soothe and support deep bronchial health and the removal of mucus. The dosage is 5-10ml 4-6 times a day initially until improvement, then reduce by half. Take for up to three days after all symptoms go.
Herbal Chest Ease: A blend of 7 herbs, specifically designed to relieve symptoms from different forms of chest discomfort - wet & dry coughs and irritating coughs. Also acute, chronic and whooping cough. For immediate support: 1 teaspoon (5ml) 3 to 5 times a day. 1 teaspoon can be taken every half hour, for up to 3 hours (do not exceed 7 teaspoons per day) Thereafter: 1 teaspoon (5ml) 2 to 3 times a day.
Lung elixer: Natural principles from the anti congestive herbs contained in this formula help penetrate into congested lung tissues, cooling, dissolving, healing and toning. The dosage is 5-10ml 4-6 times a day initially until improvement, then reduce by half. Take for up to three days after all symptoms go.
Mullein: If you have a cough or bronchial infection, take 2ml mullein, in a small amount of water, every 3 hours for the first 24 hours, while awake. If no improvement is noticed after this time, continue for a further 24 hours. Mullein is particularly good for coughing at nighttime. After the intensive dosage, continue with just 2ml two or three times a day, and take for up to 3 days after all symptoms are gone. We also have mullein in a capsule.
For the relief of sore throat: Mix an extra dose of the Echinacea Liquid and gargle with this deeply. Spit out. Do this 3-4 times a day, if needed. You can also gargle with sage tea.
Coldeze Lozenges. May bring immediate benefits of soothing the throat and relieving cold symptoms. Contains propolis, echinacea, astragalus and olive leaf, as well as Vitamin C and zinc.

Other important considerations for a cold or the flu:
Vitamin C: 500mg every 2-3 hours, except in cases where a lot of mucous exists
Cleanse the colon: The herbal laxative Cascara could be used (ask practitioner first). The Vitamin C could also assist here, however if the bowels have not moved within 36 hours please contact your health care provider.
Consume only simple foods/reduce mucous forming foods: Avoid sugar, breads, tea, coffee, meat or junk food and dairy products. All tropical fruits, nuts and starch foods. Best foods are vegetable broths or soups (carrots, onion, parsley, potato etc) vegetable juices (carrots, parsley, celery), steamed vegetables, fruit but no citrus except lemon. Increase heating foods, ginger, black pepper, cayenne and fenugreek
