Bilberry assists with eye problems...
Bilberry has been used for hundreds of years for maintaining the health of our eyes. It is excellent for treating conjunctivitis, eyestrain, cataracts & weak eyesight as well as for nasal congestion & coughs due to its antioxidant properties.
What health problems can bilberry help with?
Bilberry has been used to treat a variety of eye problems, such as:
- Conjunctivitis
- Cataract formation
- Glaucoma
- Weak eyesight
- Eyestrain
- To help remove cysts caused by chronic eye inflammation
Bilberry eye wash...
Traditionally it was used to make an eyewash for inflammations and other eye problems. It is often combined with other herbs, such as goldenseal, echinacea and fennel seeds to relieve redness, swelling and irritation of the eye.
Bilberry has been used for hundreds of years for maintaining the health of our optical system. It is said that during World War II, British pilots ate bilberry jam before night missions.
Bilberry and glaucoma...
Bilberry may prevent acute glaucoma attacks and may play an important role in the treatment of chronic glaucoma. Taking bilberry improves night vision, decreases light sensitivity and improves the ability to adapt to bright light. It decreases small vessel permeability and haemorrhage and has collagen stabilising properties.
How does bilberry work?
The antioxidant bioflavanoid complexes contained in bilberry improve capillary circulation, improving cellular integrity, decreasing cell fragility and leakage. This is most notable in the eyes, where it has been shown to improve visual acuity, by improving light-gathering capabilities and overcoming problems with night blindness.
Does bilberry come from the berries or leaves?
Most bilberry products contain an extract that is derived from the skins of the berries. The berries contain more of the active constituents, anthocyanins. The anthocyanins decrease permeability in blood vessels, which increase circulation.
Does bilberry just help with eye problems?
It has been included as an important part in formulas for treating anaemia.
Some of the other uses of bilberry are as a sugar regulator for diabetes; in combinations for vein, artery and vascular support, such as for varicose veins or easy bruising.
It may also play a role in relieving menstrual problems, as studies have found it helps to relax smooth muscles, like those found in the uterine wall. Bilberry can be used during pregnancy.
