As men age, many experience non-malignant growth of the prostate gland due to various factors. This often leads to a narrowing of the urethra, which is the outlet channel of the bladder. Noticeable effects include: Poor urine flow, Incomplete bladder empting, Frequent urination both during the day and night, as well as Dribbling after urination. Researchers believe testosterone may be a primary cause of prostate gland growth. Closer inspection reveals 2 distinct enzymes act separately upon testosterone, converting it into highly activated forms which encourage protein synthesis and prostate cell growth. The first, 5-alpha-reductase (5-AR), converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). The second, aromatase, converts testosterone into 17-beta-estradiol.
