Salmon oil is one of the best sources of omega 3 fatty acids. The Omega 3 fatty acids, mainly found in certain seafood's, have been clearly shown to offer some protection against heart disease. They help reduce abnormal blood clotting, high cholesterol and blood pressure - all factors which contribute to this condition. The fish oils are not directly responsible for these actions, as the body converts the fatty acids into prostaglandin's and other similar compounds. These then exert their effects on various tissues of the body. Some people find these substances also provide relief from arthritis. Omega-3 fatty acids keep this cancer effect of omega-6 fatty acids under control. For optimal resistance to cancer, you have to keep your intake of omega-3 fatty acids dominant over omega-6. Nutritionally speaking, most western diets, including the NZ diet, are very low in alpha-linolenic acid (omega-3) but high in linoleic acid (omega-6). Most vegetable oils have little or no omega-3 fatty acids and a lot of omega-6 fatty acids. The only common oil that contains a healthy balance is organic flaxseed. The benefits of omega-3 fatty acids does not stop with cancer. The evidence is impressive that a high intake of omega-3 fatty acids goes a long way to inhibit cardiovascular disease, adult onset diabetes, some skin diseases and rheumatoid arthritis.
