Cranberries and their juice have long been regarded as folk treatments for urinary tract infections. In early American medicine, the crushed berries were applied to tumours and poulticed on wounds. The berries were recognized as a treatment for scurvy (a vitamin C deficiency) and dysentery. Although cranberry has long been described as a urinary antiseptic, there is no convincing evidence that cranberry juice acidifies the urine to the point of inhibiting the growth of bacteria. Initially it was believed that the low pH (high acidity) of the Cranberries may account for its ability to reduce bacterial infection in the urinary tract. And although this may help, recently, however, scientists discovered that cranberry juice and extracts of this, prevent the adhesion of E. colic bacteria to the lining of the bladder and the gut, inhibiting their ability to colonize and cause infection. People also ask about drinking cranberry juice to help with UTI. Most Cranberry juice contains large amounts of sugar. Sugar will feed the bacteria on the bladder wall, making this grow even more. Those with a UTI need to avoid added sugar, as this will only make the problem worse. The anti-adhesion properties of Cranberry may also inhibit the bacteria associated with gastric and peptic ulcers from finding purchase in gastrointestinal linings. Peptic ulcers are increasingly being attributed to infection by Helicobacter pylori bacteria, as opposed to stress and/or stomach acidity. Some promising preliminary clinical trials have shown that a high-molecular-weight nondialysable constituent of Cranberries inhibits the adhesion of H. pylori to human gastric mucus in vitro.
