Common Uses

Oral intake of Glutathione raises plasma levels of GSH, and is highly concentrated in the luminal (gut lining) thus protecting the intestinal endothelial cells against free radicals and oxidative stress. Oxidative stress leads to cellular damage and malabsorption of nutrients. Therefore any inflammatory conditions of the gut, ie irritable bowel, ulcerative colitis and crohn disease will greatly benefit from supplementation. Glutathione has been used in cases relating to AIDS, alcoholism, arthritis, asthma, cigarette smoke exposure, heart disease, infections, liver damage, poor immunity, radiation exposure. Glutathione reduces the side effects of chemotherapy and is capable of chelating heavy metals from the body. It is a major component in supporting the detoxification processes in the gut, liver and bowel.

Glutathione (GSH) is one of the powerful antioxidants in the body and tissue fluids. It helps recycle vitamin C and E, so as to maintain their antioxidant activity. Glutathione is a tripeptide which can be synthesised by cells from dietary amino acids or it can be supplemented in the diet. N-Acetyl Cysteine, a sulphur bearing amino acid can also act as a bioavailable raw ingredient to glutathione production. Dietary sources include garlic, and animal tissue. Cellular Glutathione levels typically decrease with age which results in a gradual decrease in immune function. In fact low Glutathione levels are commonly found in sufferers of chronic fatigue syndrome, resulting in immune dysfunction. There is an approximately 17% fall in Glutathione status in between the age of 40 and 60 years. It is not surprising to find that individuals with the high level of glutathione have fewer disease and live longer, and healthier lives. Glutathione boosts the ability of T cells to divide and improves their ability to attack foreign bodies. It also blocks replication of HIV through deactivation of activated oxygen intermediates. Glutathione is a powerful detoxifier of many chemicals ranging from heavy metals, insecticides, industrial chemicals and environmental toxins.
