Glutamine is a neutral glycogenic amino acid, the most abundant amino acid in the body. Glutamine is broken down and taken up into the absorptive cells of the intestine and is used as fuel for the intestinal mucosa and lymphocytes. The body primarily forms glutamine in skeletal muscles, the kidneys, liver, adipose tissue, the lungs and heart. As much as 60 per cent of free-floating amino acids in the muscle is stored glutamine. The main consumers appear to be the kidneys, gut and cells of the immune system. On a low carbohydrate diet, the liver may also consume glutamine. The immune system needs glutamine as an energy source for cell growth and division. Glutamine is used at a high rate by lymphocytes and macrophages (part of the lymphatic system which neutralises foreign material and toxic substances). Glutamine is also involved the transfer of nitrogen between organs and the detoxification of ammonia. Hence, the more stress your immune system is under, the more chance of the muscles being in a catabolic condition. Likewise, the stress of a hard workout can decrease muscle glutamine levels. Glutamine is also an important vehicle for the transportation of nitrogen and carbon within the tissues. Carbohydrate-depleted diets result in greater protein breakdown during exercise. Studies measuring urea excretion after exercise in carbohydrate-depleted conditions support this theory. Glutamine is essential to dieting or a low-carbohydrate diet. When the body is in a carbohydrate-depleted state, the muscle during exercise will use branch chain amino acids as fuel. The ammonia produced from the oxidative process of these amino acids will be released from the muscle primarily in the form of glutamine and alanine. Prolonged exercise is known to increase plasma (blood fluid) cortisol levels, which promotes protein catabolism and glutamine release. Gluconeogenesis (conversion of proteins and fatty acids to glucose by the liver) may also be induced in the liver, gastrointestinal tract and renal glands.
