NFS Trim-FX Caralluma & Hoodia. High potency weight management formula. Caralluma (kar-a-loom-a) fimbiata. New to the supplement market is the herb Caralluma fimbriata which is an edible cactus, used by tribal Indians as a portable food for hunting to suppress hunger and enhance endurance. It has been referred to as a "famine food," due to its use during periods of famine to suppress appetite. This product is combined with another cactus Hoodia gordonii. This has been used as a popular appetite suppressant. The Kalahari (San) bushmen ingested this plant by cutting off the stems and chewing the bitter-tasting plant to keep hunger at bay during long hunting trips and in times of drought. Hoodia was brought to attention in the west in 1937, when a Dutch anthropologist studying the Bushmen, noted that they used Hoodia gordonii to suppress the appetite by bringing on the feeling of fullness. This exciting new weight management product complies with the CITES certification required. This means that the local bushmen receive a percentage of all Hoodia sales worldwide, thus giving back to the indigenous people. 30 capsules

Caralluma (kar-a-loom-a) fimbiata. Published research explores its use as an appetite suppressant with the added effect of decreasing waist circumference. In one study headed “Effect of Caralluma Fimbriata extract on appetite and food intake”, 50 overweight subjects were assessed for 60 days whilst consuming caralluma extract .The findings showed waist circumference and hunger levels over a 2 month period declined significantly in the experimental group when compared to the placebo group. (Kuriyan.R., et al. Appetite, (2006), doi:10.1016/ j.appet. 2006.09.013)
Another trial with similar results showed a statistically significant reduction in body weight and showed caralluma was well tolerated e.g. no adverse side effects after consumption. (Ronald. M. Lawrence and Suneeta Choudhary. Caralluma Fimbriata in the Treatment of Obesity. 12th Annual World Congress of Anti-Aging Medicine, December 2004, Las Vegas, USA).
How it works? In an independent safety review documented by Dr.Harry Preuss of Georgetown University Medical Centre Washington DC, USA, it was postulated the reason for its weight reduction effect is due to the active ingredient, pregnane glycosides, which prevents fat accumulation via blocking an enzyme, citatre lyase. Simply put, this herb blocks the formation of fatty acids in the liver. Another effect of pregnane glycoside is its inhibitory effect on the appetite control center of the brain causing a feeling of fullness and suppressing the need to eat.
Hoodia gordonii. One plant which has gained great popularity as an appetite suppressant is the South African Kalahari native cactus, Hoodia gordonii.
In 1963, scientists at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), South Africa's national laboratory, began studying hoodia for its weight loss benefits. Much later in 1997 exclusive rights where given, for the patented extract, to the British company, Phytopharm.
How it works? The isolated substance which has the supposed appetite suppression activity, is called P-57 after the Phytopharm company which discovered the substance (57 because it was the 57th product they spent money on). Phytopharm's Dr Richard Dixey explained how P-57 actually works: "There is a part of your brain, the hypothalamus. Within that mid-brain there are nerve cells that sense glucose sugar. When you eat, blood sugar goes up because of the food, these cells start firing and now you are full. What the Hoodia seems to contain is a molecule that is about 10,000 times as active as glucose. It goes to the mid-brain and actually makes those nerve cells fire as if you were full. But you have not eaten. Nor do you want to. “
In one study, which was published in the September 2004 issue of Brain Research, it was discovered that injections of p57 into the appetite center of rat brains resulted in altered levels of ATP, an energy molecule that may affect hunger. The animals receiving the P57 injections also ate less than rats that received placebo injections.
Because this plant may be threatened with extinction if international trade is not monitored it is protected by national conservation laws in Namibia and South Africa. It is listed under CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) and is illegal to export from Africa without a CITES certificate being issued by proper authorities.
