Acai berry (pronounced ah-sigh-ee), is a purple coloured fruit indigenous to the Amazon rainforests of South America. Its high concentrations of fibres, anthocyanin pigments and phenolic antioxidants have lead to this berry being deemed as a super fruit worldwide. Açaí fruit is a staple food in rural and urban areas of the eastern Amazon region and has become the main economic activity for a large number of towns. Native Brazilian healers have long used açai for curing common ailments and for increasing sex drive, while Amazonian warriors would eat it before going into battle to help improve stamina and give them courage. Açai has demonstrated significantly high antioxidant capacity in cell studies, especially for superoxide and peroxyl scavenging. It was found to have exceptional activity against the free radical superoxide and the highest of any food reported to date against the peroxyl radical. In actual fact, açai has one of the highest ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) values in the world and contains up to 30 times more antioxidant activity than red wine. Studies have also shown that the antioxidants in açai are capable of entering human cells in a fully functional form and to perform an oxygen quenching function at very low doses. Açai was also found to be a potential cyclooxygenase (COX)-1 and COX-2 inhibitor, playing a role in the body's anti-inflammatory pathways.
