Resveratrol has been shown to reduce carcinogenesis by activating apoptosis (programmed cell death) and inhibiting cellular proliferation and angiogenesis. It has been shown to reduce oxidative damage, suppress platelet aggregation, modulate inflammation, reduce insulin resistance, enhance glucose tolerance and promote healthy oestrogen metabolism. Resveratrol is a polyphenol compound predominantly found in grape skins, grape seeds, Japanese knotweed and peanuts and is produced in response to pathogenic attack, fungal infections (common in grapes) and UV-irradiation. Japanese knotweed (Polygonum cuspidatum) Japanese Knotweed is claimed to be the highest known source of resveratrol containing 1,000 times the resveratrol content of grapes. Polygonum cuspidatum, also call Hu chang, is used in traditional Chinese and Japanese medicine to treat inflammation, allergy and hyperlipidaemia.
