Chromium is an essential trace mineral that is deficient in New Zealand soils. On top of this, the average Western diet is deficient in chromium containing foods. Chromium is needed for correct insulin function, it stimulates the activity of enzymes involved in the metabolism of glucose for energy and the synthesis of fatty acids and cholesterol. It appears to increase the effectiveness of insulin to handle glucose and can help prevent hypoglycaemia or diabetes.
