There are two essential fatty acids or EFA - linoleic acid (omega-6), linolenic acid (omega-3) and three EFA derivatives arachidonic acid (AA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) which are only made from ingesting adequate supplies of the two EFA's. They are called essential, because the body is not able to manufacture them, so we must take them in from a food or supplement source. Fish oil is one of the best sources of omega 3 fatty acids. Omega 3 has been shown to offer some protection against heart disease. It helps reduce abnormal blood clotting, high cholesterol and blood pressure - all factors which contribute to heart disease. The fish oils are not directly responsible for these actions, but the body converts the fatty acids into prostaglandins and other similar compounds. These then exert their effects on various tissues of the body. Arthritis sufferers may find Omega-3 beneficial, as the oil also contains vitamins A and D - traditional nutrients for helping to relieve the pain of arthritis. Other studies show that some of these prostaglandin's can help kill breast, lung and prostate cancer cells stone dead. From this evidence, the Journal of the National Cancer Institute declared that omega-3 fats have "potential clinical usefulness" in cancer treatment. For optimal resistance to cancer, you have to keep your intake of omega-3 fatty acids dominant over omega-6. Nutritionally speaking, most western diets, including the NZ diet, are very low in alpha-linolenic acid (omega-3) but high in linoleic acid (omega-6). Most vegetable oils have little or no omega-3 fatty acids and a lot of omega-6 fatty acids. The benefits of omega-3 fatty acids do not stop with cancer. The evidence is impressive that a high intake of omega-3 fatty acids goes a long way to inhibit cardiovascular disease, adult onset diabetes, some skin diseases and rheumatoid arthritis. The human brain is so highly dependant on DHA that low levels of this have been linked to depression, schizophrenia, memory loss and a higher risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. Researches are now also linking inadequate intake of these omega-3 fats in pregnant women to premature birth and to hyperactivity in children.

Each Soft Gel contains: Omega-3 Fish oil concentrate 1000mg (Primarily from the flesh of North Atlantic cold water fish - salmon, mackerel, anchovies and sardines) Providing Omega-3 fatty acids 340mg, Including Eicosapentaenoic (EPA) acid 180mg & Docosahexaenoic (DHA) acid 120mg, d-alpha-tocopherol (soy) 1.3IU. Other ingredients: Gelatin capsule, glycerin, water. No corn, egg, gluten, milk derivatives, nuts, salicylates, salt, sugar, wheat, yeast, artificial preservatives, flavouring or colours.
