Common Uses

Vitamin D is valuable in maintaining a stable nervous system, normal heart action, and normal blood clotting because all these functions are related to the body's supply and utilization of calcium and phosphorus. Vitamin D maintains calcium and phosphorous in the blood by stimulating their absorption in the GI tract, mobilizing calcium and phosphorous out of the bones and into the blood, and it stimulates retention by the kidney. It is best utilized when taken with vitamin A. Fish-liver oils are the best natural source of both vitamins A and D.

Suggested Dosage

Adults take one (1) tablet daily with food.

Health Information

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble nutrient which can be acquired either by ingestion or by exposure to sunlight. Its previtamin form is known as the "sunshine" vitamin because the action of the sun's ultraviolet rays activates a form of cholesterol (one of the many good functions of cholesterol) which is present in the skin, converting it to vitamin D. Before it becomes active, it is altered by the liver; then the kidneys change it again into its active form, which is called dihydroxy. Other names are calciferon, ergosterol, cholecalciferol, and ergocalciferol. A unique aspect of vitamin D is that it functions very much like a hormone and has been referred to as one, as it targets organs like the kidneys and intestines. Other target tissues are the brain, the pancreas, the skin, the bones, the reproductive organs, and some cancer cells. Vitamin D is a part of the group of nutrients and other compounds that maintain bone growth and health. Its particular duty is to promote bone mineralization. It helps synthesize those enzymes in the mucous membranes which are involved in the active transport of available calcium. It is necessary for normal growth in children, for without it bones and teeth do not calcify properly. Ingested vitamin D is absorbed with the fats through the intestinal walls with the aid of bile. The vitamin, from dehydrocholesterol by sun radiation, is formed in the skin and absorbed into the circulatory system. The sun's action on the skin can also be inhibited by such factors as smoke, window glass, and clothing. Excessive amounts of vitamin D may cause high levels of calcium and phosphorus in the blood and excessive excretion of calcium in the urine; this leads to calcification of soft tissues and of the walls of the blood vessels and kidney tubules, a condition known as hypercalcemia. A deficiency of vitamin D leads to inadequate absorption of calcium from the intestinal tract and retention of phosphorus in the kidney, leading to faulty mineralization of bone structures. The symptoms of a calcium deficiency are those of a vitamin D deficiency. The inability of the soft bones to withstand the stress of weight results in skeletal malformations. Rickets, a bone disorder in children, is a direct result of a deficiency. Both vitamin D and calcium help keep bones healthy and strong during menopause. It may be helpful in preventing hip fracture in the elderly. Vitamin D has been correlagted with the defense against depression in a Scandinavian study. Vitamins D and A have been beneficial in reducing the incidence of colds, taken along with vitamin C act as a preventive measure.
