Common Uses

To achieve the best results it is necessary to dilute the concentrated essential oil before application. Burners and light bulb rings are effective ways to disperse the oil aroma. Or add to a carrier oil and massage into the skin. In the bath basil is uplifting and refreshing, but is also has a strange feeling on the skin, which is hot and cold at the same time, and the more you put in the water the more it stings, like a fine pin-prick. It is a good antiseptic, expectorant, and (neurotropic) antispasmodic and may be useful for asthma, bronchitis, and emphysema. Oil of basil is an excellent, indeed perhaps the best, aromatic nerve tonic. It clears the head, relieves intellectual fatigue, and gives the mind strength and clarity. It has been used in all types of nervous disorders, especially those associated with weakness, indecision, or hysteria. Basil is one of the most pleasant oils, and is of great value in states of nervousness, anxiety, and depression. It is uplifting, clarifying, and strengthening. Its antispasmodic action renders it an effective remedy for hiccough and whooping cough. Perhaps not such a strong remedy on the physical level; it acts more on the mind and emotions. It is a more pleasing scent and a more subtle remedy, and should be used when the mind is the predominant factor sickness relating to respiration, digestion, and the nervous system. It has a stimulating effect on the skin, and may be used - always in moderation - for sluggish, congested skins, or as a general tonic-refresher. It has proved a useful insect repellent, particularly of mosquitoes, and has also been used for the bites of insects, snakes, and scorpions.

Suggested Dosage

5 drops in 10mls carrier oil for massage or bath. Direct inhalation. Direct application on temples or 1-6 drops in burner.
