Indications for use. The following conditions can all be caused by excessive blood clotting: Stroke, heart attack, senile dementia, angina pectoris, cerebral haemorrhage, deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Nattokinase was discovered in 1980 by a University of Chicago researcher - Dr Hiroyuki Sumi who had spent years researching agents that assist in breaking up blood clots. After testing 173 natural foods, Dr Sumi found what he was looking for, when fibrin exposed to natto in a petri dish dissolved completely in 18 hours! Dr Sumi named this enzyme "nattokinase" which means enzyme in natto. Dr Sumi commented that Nattokinase showed "a potency matched by no other enzyme". Nattokinase is extracted and purified from Natto - a traditional Japanese fermented soybean food used for over a thousand years. The enzyme nattokinase is produced during the natural fermentation process when the beneficial bacteria bacillus natto acts on the boiled soy beans. There are three separate mechanisms of action that help nattokinase maintain healthy regulation of blood clotting activity. These include the direct fibrinolytic clot dissolving activity and the regulation of key natural factors (plasminogen, prourokinase and urokinase) that participate in the production of fibrin and blood clot formation.
