Common Uses

Eye inflammations have been treated with eyebright for centuries. Soothing to the mucous membranes, eyebright relieves eye inflammation due to allergies and air pollutants. Useful for any eye irritations, such as eye strain, pink eye and infections. It has astringent properties and the tea, when used as a wash or warm compress, is extremely soothing to sore tired eyes. Can also be used for conditions such as conjunctivitis, blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelid), glaucoma, sties or any inflammation of the eye tissues.

Suggested Dosage

Two capsules three times per day with water. Can also be brewed as a tea To make eye drops: Open 1 capsule and pour the contents into a sterilised cup. Pour over this, approximately 3cm of boiled water. Stir with a sterilised fork, then allow to settle for a couple of minutes. Get another sterilised cup and put a new and preferable sterilised filter paper, such as is used in a coffee percolator, on the top of the cup. Strain the "tea" through the filter paper. The strained liquid is the eye drops. This should be chilled and put into a sterilised bottle, preferably with an eye dropper in it. These eye drops must be refrigerated and should be discarded after 2 days. Avoid allowing the eye dropper to touch the eye. If it does, sterilise the eye dropper before returning to the bottle or discard and make a fresh batch. To use, Place 2-3 drops in each eye, 2-3 times a day. Even if only 1 eye is the problem, put in both eyes. Note: When used as an eyewash, ensure that all utensils used in preparation are made of glass or stainless steel. Cool tea to body temperature before application. also encourage patient to follow a low-mucus diet (eliminate re meats, dairy products white flour, white sugar, fast food and fried carbohydrates), until condition improves.

Health Information

Eyebright is specific for problems with the eyes. It makes an excellent external eyewash, that can help reduce redness and inflammation. It is soothing, cleansing and is best suited to external application. Internally it has been used to help clear mucus build-up and inflammation in the respiratory tract.

Per 2 capsules: Eyebright Herb (Euphrasia officinalis) 800mg. Other ingredients: Gelatin and water.
