Health Information

Taurine combines with choleric acid to form the bile salt, taurocholic acid. This removes a cholesterol degradation product from the system and assists in the emulsification and absorption of fats. This amino acid is also thought to act as a neurotransmitter in some areas of the brain and retina. There is evidence that taurine acts as a regulator of calcium ion fluxes in heart muscles. Taurine can also act as an antioxidant. Medical Uses: Taurine is added to most synthetic infant food formulas and to parenteral nutrition solutions. Taurine has been used with other antioxidants in diets for subjects at risk for cardiovascular disease. These antioxidant effects are also the basis for the reduction in the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug-induced gastric mucosal damage that has been observed after taurine administration. The antioxidant effects of taurine are probably the reason that it has been used with some success in the treatment of radiation injuries. Taurine also has direct beneficial effects on the heart and may be useful as an anti-arrhythmic and in congestive heart failure. In patients with ascites associated with cirrhosis, taurine was shown to have a beneficial diuretic effect. Taurine may also be useful in other consequences of cirrhosis of the liver including muscle cramps and encephalopathy. Fatty liver in children has also been successfully treated with taurine. Taurine has been used to lower high blood cholesterol and in the treatment of alcohol withdrawal symptoms. It has also been used to treat some forms of epilepsy. Taurine is a suitable antioxidant for use in eye drops to treat damage caused by oxidising substances such as hypochlorite. Daily Requirements: Because taurine can be synthesized in the body, dietary intake is not essential. However, under some circumstances dietary intake may not be sufficient and supplementation is necessary.
