Health Information

Methionine is the dietary precursor of another important amino acid, cysteine. It is also a precursor in the synthesis of creatine. In the form of creatine phosphate this is the major store of immediately available energy in muscles. Further, methionine is the starting amino acid in the synthesis of proteins in humans. (Each protein chain starts with a methionine unit). Methionine is a lipotropic agent (mobilises fat deposits in the liver caused by dietary imbalances). Methionine has also been shown to cause the release of growth hormone in children. Sports use: Methionine is used in preparations with glycine and arginine as a supplement to provide improved performance in sports requiring repeated high levels of exertion. The basis for this use is that these amino acids are required for the synthesis of creatine and elevated creatine levels have been shown to be of benefit in sports of this type. Other possible mechanisms by which this combination might have an effect include elevation of blood glucose and stimulation of growth hormone secretion. Medical Uses: Because administration of methionine enhances the synthesis of glutathione, this amino acid is used in the treatment of paracetamol poisoning to prevent liver damage. This effect might be extrapolated to other situations where the availability of a methyl group donor will assist the liver in detoxification. Methionine has also been shown to lower the circulating levels of acetaldehyde after ethanol indigestion and is included in a preparation used for the treatment of hangovers. In a randomised double-blind methionine treatment was shown to improve the healing of duodenal ulcers when given in combination with cimetidine. The response with the combination was significantly better than cimetidine treatment alone. Daily Requirements: the daily requirement of methionine of healthy young adults with normal activity levels is about 2.02g. The need for methionine is affected by the intake of cysteine, since methionine is an essential dietary precursor of cysteine. If insufficient cysteine is present in the diet, then the requirement for methionine will be increased.
