ProstaCare is a research-based combination of nutrients designed to maintain healthy functioning of the prostate gland. It contains herbs and also minerals, which can offer these benefits relating to the prostate gland. Saw Palmetto Saw palmetto extract is derived from the berried of a small palm tree. The fatty acids in the berries may assist in maintaining healthy male hormone ratios in prostate tissue, thus preventing inflammation and prostate enlargement. Saw palmetto has anti-androgenic, anti-proliferative and anti inflammatory properties that seem to be responsible for improving symptoms of benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH). It appears to inhibit 5 Alpha reductase types 1 and 2 and to prevent the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in vitro, which might reduce prostate growth. Nettle root Nettle root is a botanical extract that exhibits similar activity to that of saw palmetto. It may prevent the conversion of testosterone to less desirable hormone species that promote prostate cell growth and inflammation. Lycopene Lycopene is a carotenoid antioxidant compound derived from tomatoes. It may prevent IGF-1 mediated cell growth and protect cell membranes and nucleic acid from oxidative damage. It may also be of benefit as an antioxidant for cardiovascular health. Most evidence suggests men who consume lycopene seem to have a lower risk of developing prostate cancer. Men with high lycopene plasma levels also seem to have an 83% lower risk of prostate cancer compared to men with low lycopene plasma levels. Zinc Zinc is an essential mineral critical to the production of the male hormone testosterone. Good levels of testosterone are important for healthy prostate gland function. The amino acids L-Glycine, L-Glutamine and L-Alanine are important components of seminal fluid, the fluid which assists in lubricating the urethra and protecting against infection.
