Common Uses

Common thiamine deficiency until recently was uncommon, however this condition seems to be on the rise as homelessness and malnutrition increase. This vitamin is essential for: nervous system function, mental attitude, improving individual learning capacity, consistent growth in children, improvement of muscle tone in the stomach, the intestines and the heart, stabilizing the appetite by improving food assimilation and digestion, particularly that of starches, sugars and alcohol. A mild deficiency is difficult to adequately diagnose and is easily attributed to other problems. First signs include easy fatigue, loss of appetite, irritability, emotional instability (asocial and aggressive behaviour) and an inability to concentrate. A chronic mild deficiency is associated with hearing voices, minor noises and nightmares and with a severe deficiency there is psychosis.

Suggested Dosage

As a food supplement for adults, take 1 capsule daily, or as directed by your healthcare professional.

Health Information

Thiamin, or vitamin B1 found in both plant and animal sources, is a water soluble vitamin that acts as a coenzyme particularly in the complex process of glucose (blood sugar) conversion into energy and is vital in certain metabolic reactions. For this reason, thiamine is needed when energy expenditure is high, as when exercising. Thiamin will adjust to the body's needs as long as enough thiamine containing energy foods are taken. Maintenance of the heart and nervous system and formation of red blood cells are all jobs of thiamine. Thiamin occurs in limited quantities in almost all foods and is found in large amounts in only a few, such as pork and organ meats.
