Glutamine is an important precursor of the purine and pyrimidine nucleotides which form part of RNA and DNA. It is also important as a carrier of nitrogen from the brain and muscle to the liver, where the nitrogen can be converted to urea. This amino acid plays an important role as a energy source, particularly for the intestine and kidney, during starvation. Glutamine along with alanine provides the mechanism for transporting energy (carbon) derived from protein from the muscles to the liver where glucose can be produced. It has been suggested that glutamine regulates protein, free fatty acid and glycogen metabolism. Glutamine administration post exercise increases glycogen accumulation. Prolonged exercise such as marathons also cause glutamine depletion. Medical Uses: It has been suggested that glutamine is effective in the treatment of peptic ulcer, mental retardation and epilepsy. Glutamine administration may be useful in the prevention or amelioration of over training syndrome. Because of the importance of glutamine supply for maintenance of an active immune system. It has been used as an adjunct in cancer treatment. Glutamine has been used to treat alcoholism. It has also been used to treat liver disease. Daily Requirements: Glutamine is not an essential amino acid in humans although under conditions of stress the synthesis of glutamine in the muscles may not be able to keep up with demand.
