Common Uses

Potassium in the human body helps to: keep normal water balance between the cells and body fluids, maintain normal blood pressure, transmit nerve impulses, enable the contraction of muscles, ensure proper functioning of cellular enzymes. Deficiencies of potassium are rare, but they can occur under the following conditions: starvation dieting, prolonged vomiting or diarrhoea, laxative abuse, severe burns, kidney problems, diuretic use.

Potassium is an essential mineral found mainly in the intracellular fluid (98%), where it is the primary positive ion force. A small amount occurs in the extracellular fluid. Potassium constitutes 5% of the total mineral content of the body. The blood contains 16 to 22 mg and the electrolytes contain 420 mg. Potassium and sodium help regulate water balance within the body, that is, they help regulate the distribution of fluids on either side of the cell walls and preserve proper alkalinity of the body fluids. Potassium also regulates the transfer of nutrients to the cells. It functions in the chemical actions in the cell, and also transmits electrochemical impulses. Potassium is necessary for normal growth enzyme reactions. It unites with phosphorus to send oxygen to the brain and also functions with calcium in the regulation of neuromuscular activity. The synthesis of muscle protein and protein from amino acids in the blood requires potassium, as does the synthesis of nucleic acid. It aids in keeping healthy and in keeping a stable blood pressure. Potassium assists in the conversion of glucose to the form in which this substance can be stored in the liver as glycogen and then to its useful form to the body's work. Protein and carbohydrate metabolism are dependant upon potassium. It stimulates the kidneys to eliminate poisonous body wastes. Potassium works with sodium to help normalise the heart beat.
