Suggested Dosage

Two capsules two times daily with water at mealtimes. Dosage can be increased slightly initially and then decreased to two capsules two times daily for extended usage. Because no one remedy seems to be 100% effective, alternating Yucca with Devil's Claw or Chaparral will sometimes yield better results.

Health Information

Yucca is a desert plant whose main medicinal constituent is the steroidal saponins. They have both a water-soluble and fat-soluble end and therefore act like a soap. The authors of a double-blind study looking at patients with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis speculate that Yucca saponins have a positive effect on gastrointestinal flora, decreasing bacterial endotoxin absorption from the intestine. Certain bacterial endotoxins have been shown to depress the manufacture of cartilage, thus Yucca may help improve the body's natural ability to manufacture healthy cartilaginous tissue. It has also been found that Yucca increases the production of natural cortisone from the adrenal glands. Both of these actions make Yucca an ideal anti-inflammatory herb to reduce all forms of inflammation, and degenerative connective tissue disorders, especially arthritis, gout and rheumatism. Yucca is also considered to have antiseptic, mild analgesic, cleansing and mild laxative properties. Traditionally Yucca was also used to treat skin disorders, arthritis, gout and rheumatism. Tests at the University of Wyoming show that Yucca may also have an anti-cancer potential.
