Folic acid is vital for pre-conception care, due to its ability to help reduce the risk of spina bifida, when taken prior to & during the first trimester of pregnancy. Ideally take with a Vitamin B Complex, to provide a balance of these nutrients. We always suggest having a blood test to determine existing levels of this nutrient. Then the correct dosage can be taken, to help correct any deficiency. 100 capsules

Clinical trials have demonstrated a significant link between folic acid intake and neural tube defects in the developing foetus. Folic acid helps regulate embryonic and foetal development of nerve cells, vital for normal growth and development. Supplementation of Folic Acid should begin three months before conception and continue for the first trimester. A deficiency in Folic Acid can lead to anaemia that cannot be corrected by supplementary iron, due to Folic Acid's role in the formation of red blood cells. Other deficiency symptoms include poor growth, greying hair, glossitis (a sore, red tongue), gastrointestinal tract disturbances arising from inadequate dietary intake, uterine fibroids, lesions in the corner of the mouth (requires a B complex), forgetfulness, irritability and mental sluggishness to name a few. This nutrient may also help depression and anxiety and may be effective in the treatment of uterine cervical dysplasia. To avoid an imbalance of B vitamins within the body a B-Complex should accompany prolonged use of individual B vitamins.
One tablet a day, with food. Each tablet contains 800mcg of Folic acid. Women are suggested to take 800mcg of folic acid a day, for 3 months prior to pregnancy and 3 months into pregnancy, to help reduce the risk of Neural tube defects. This should preferable be taken in conjunction with a B complex or a multivitamin containing a balanced assortment of the other B complex vitamins.
Considered a brain food, folic acid is needed for energy production and the formation of red blood cells. Functioning as a coenzyme in DNA synthesis, it is important for healthy cell division and replication. It is involved in protein metabolism and has been used in the prevention and treatment of folic acid anaemia. Folic acid works best when combined with vitamin B12. Oral contraceptives may increase the need for folic acid.
