Common Uses

Gotu Kola's ability to enhance nervous system balance and function gives rise to the herbs use for nervous agitation, memory loss, anxiety, libido, insomnia, epilepsy and hyperactivity. Used by students as a brain cell activator to help recall. Has also been used in children with ADD or ADHD for its ability to assist concentration. Some research has been done into its effectiveness for healthy brain function in the treatment of Alzheimers Disease. When taken internally may help promote wound healing making it useful for surgical wounds, burns, childbirth tears, anal fissures, skin ulcers and varicose veins.

Suggested Dosage

Two capsules two or three times daily with water at mealtimes. For long term usage (more than eight weeks), dosage should be decreased to one capsule twice daily. NOTE: Follow recommendations and avoid large doses or prolonged use. Overdose may cause depression of the central nervous system and produce effects such as mild vertigo and dizziness.

Gotu Kola is known in India as a longevity herb. It relaxes the nervous system and is considered to be brain food. It is often used as a rejuvenation tonic to increase general health and body strength, enhance healing and convalesce, soothe mental disorders, reduce stress effects, anxiety and mental fatigue, improve libido, sleep and circulation and to reduce high blood pressure. The main areas of the body affected by the actions of Gotu Kola are the brain, nervous system, connective tissue and skin. Some studies have shown that Gotu kola can help increase IQ, mental ability and improve behaviour of mentally retarded children (along with cayenne and ginseng). Preliminary research suggests that Gotu kola encourages production of neurotransmitters essential for healthy brain function giving rise to its use in Alzheimers Disease. Recent research indicates that Gotu kola has an effect on connective tissue and healing. It has been found to be helpful for the following ailments, sports injury, skin disorders, wound healing, improved dermal integrity, improved circulation in the skin and connective tissue. There have been excellent results from studies conducted on the treatment of burn patients with second and third degree burns due to boiling water, electrocution, or gas explosions. The Gotu kola extract helped limit the swelling and shrinking of skin which occurs as a result of burning. It reduced infections and enhanced healing time.
