A recently published study showed positive results regarding the effects of omega-3 fatty acids on dyslexic and hyperactive children. The results were seen after only 12 weeks of treatment.
41 Children aged 8-12 years with both learning difficulties and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) were randomly allocated a fatty acid supplementation (combination of omega-6 & 6 fatty acids and vitamin E), or a placebo for 12 weeks. At both base line and floow up, a range of behavioural and learning problems were assessed using standardized parent rating scales. The groups did not differ at baseline, but after 12 weeks of treatment the mean scores for cognitive and general behaviour problems were significantly lower for the group receiving the fatty acid supplement than for the placebo group.
Because of the abundant quantities of omega-6 fatty acids present in a normal diet, the authours suggest that it is improbable that children do suffer from a deficiency of these types of fat. However because of the general lack of fish in the average diet, it was proposed that it is the combination of the omega-3 fatty acids, EPA & DHA, which are important in producing the positive effects.
The researcher concluded that supplemental fatty acids appear to reduce ADHD-related symptoms and given the safety and tolerability of this simple treatment, results from this study strongly support the case for further investigations.
