"Myalgia" Means Muscle Pain

People often feel a sense of relief when diagnosed with fibromyalgia, because they now have a name for what they are suffering from. However, this name simply declares that they are experiencing "skeletal muscle pain" - 'fibro' means fibre (as in fibrous tissue) and 'myalgia' means muscle pain.

I'm sure everyone who has fibromyalgia would agree that the condition encompasses a lot more than just this literal translation. As many as 50,000 New Zealanders suffer from diagnosed fibromyalgia, many thousand more may never have been diagnosed. The impact of fibromyalgia on a person's quality of life can be devastating. The level of pain and stiffness can vary from person to person and from day to day. Constant fatigue, poor sleeping patterns, depression, irritable bowel and headaches or migraines are amongst the most common signs and symptoms.
