The Sneezin Season

The Sneezin Season

Tuesday, October 28th 2003

Spring for many people heralds the start of the sneezing, allergy and hay fever season. It may seem that your nose has sprung a leak associated with watery eyes and sneezing. Some people have these symptoms year round because they are allergic not only to pollens but also moulds, dust mites, animal dander and other airborne offenders. Others may develop allergic skin conditions such as hives and eczema. In some people it may affect the lungs in the form of asthma.

According to Allergy New Zealand, inquiries to the organisation have increased from 7,500 in 1998 to 100,000 in 2002. It is estimated that nearly half the population is now affected by allergies. Why?

Most allergies occur because the sufferer's immune system over responds. Herbs can help relieve symptoms but no single remedy will cure allergies. The basic principles of health - eating well, exercising and getting enough rest - are even more crucial during the allergy season. It helps to avoid the thing that you are allergic to, but that is not always possible, especially with airborne pollens.

With allergies, a "one-remedy-fits-all" approach is rarely successful. It is critical that the underlying cause is considered. Over the counter medicines and prescription drugs can only provide symptom relief, often with unacceptable side effects. A number of herbal remedies have been used successfully to help build the body to withstand the attack of the allergen.

Radiance Quercetin with Bromelain

Quercetin has been tested in Japan on the cells of people with year round nasal allergy symptoms where it proved to significantly block histamine release. Around 1000mg of a quercetin supplement twice a day is recommended. Bromelain, an enzyme from pineapples that has its own anti-allergy and anti-inflammatory properties is often included with quercetin in supplements.

Nature's Way Reishi Mushroom

This medicinal mushroom has been used for thousands of years in oriental medicine to treat respiratory disorders. It contains anti-inflammatory substances plus substances shown to inhibit histamine release. Reishi also has antiviral and immune enhancing effects.

Nature's Way HAS

This herbal formula has been used for decades to help relieve the symptoms of Hayfever, Allergies and Sinus congestion. The herbs in this formula act as an antihistamine and provide natural soothing decongestant action for the irritated nasal passages. It is specially formulated for long term use to help strengthen the mucous membranes and prevent them from over reacting to allergens.

Ester C

Vitamin C is useful to block histamine release, is an antioxidant and enhances immune function. Some studies suggest benefits for allergy and asthma sufferers. At least 2000mg daily of Vitamin C are recommended for these conditions.

Nature's Start Colostrum

This is also useful to assist the immune system response in people with asthma and allergies.
