Arteriosclerosis

Atherosclerosis is a degenerative disease of the arteries in which a fatty patch (atheroma) consisting mainly of cholesterol builds up on the wall of an artery. This eventually hardens and partially blocks the artery, causing the formation of a blood clot behind it. It is a progressive condition, generally worsening with age, resulting in arteriosclerosis which is the calcification of the plaques and a hardening and narrowing of the arteries. It is most dangerous when the arteries supplying blood to the heart and brain are affected.
