A condition in which the body's immune system produces antibodies to certain substances (known as allergens) which would not usually cause antibody formation. An allergy can be divided into 2 seperate categories - contact/airborne and food related. Common airborne allergens are pollen, animal hair, animal dander, feathers, house mites and house dust. Shellfish, peanuts and eggs, in some people, may cause a severe reaction such as anaphylaxis.
