Alcoholism is a chronic condition marked by dependence on, or an addiction to, alcohol - either physiological or psychological. It causes metabolic damage to every cell and depresses the immune system. If the alcoholic continues to drink, he may shorten his life span by 10 - 15 years. Alcohol-addicted people may be able to drink normally at times, but they are unpredictable. At other times, they drink far too much and lose control. Others drink continuously because of a physical addiction and /or mental addiction, as if their life were missing something vital without it. Drinking in spite of not wanting to, and then feeling remorse at having failed not to do so, is one of the signs of alcoholism.
The effects of drug and alcohol abuse only get worse if an addict or alcoholic cannot be made to see the damage he or she is causing themselves or to those around them.
At an alcohol and drug treatment center, people with a drug addiction can finally get the chance to clean up and reclaim their lives.
