Herpes simplex I (characterised by cold sores and skin eruptions) and herpes simplex II (found in the genital area and sexually transmitted) are just 2 of the 5 types of human herpes simplex virus. The other 3 types cause chicken pox, mononucleosis and shingles. This virus moves into healthy cells, reprogramming them to work for the virus. It will remain in some form in the body for life, however, with time the body eventually becomes more efficient in suppressing it. Most of the time the virus will remain dormant and will not be contagious.
